You don't have to wait for New Year's Day to serve this Hoppin’ John recipe! It is good year-round!

The perfect combination of rice and andouille sausage, this recipe has a hint of a kick but is not too spicy. You can easily add extra spice if you want it to be a bit spicier.

Do you have any New Year's Day traditions? Anything you do to bring good luck for the upcoming year?

I read that some people put a penny under their plate of Hoppin Johns on New Year's Day to boost their money luck in the new year.

When researching New Year's Day traditions, I thought it was cool that everyone in Brazil wears white to celebrate the New Year. They also jump over seven waves and make a wish for each wave they jump over in Brazil.

Did you know they break dishes on friends' and families' doorsteps in Denmark to bring them good luck? I don't know how I feel about this tradition. The more broken dishes you have, the luckier you are supposed to be, but this makes me wonder how the person who cleans them up feels.

Recipe Variations

Substitutions: You can use smoked ham, crumbled bacon, or smoked sausage if you don't have andouille sausage.

Diners who don’t eat red meat can replace this pork-based sausage with smoked turkey sausage.

You can also swap the salsa for your favorite variety of Rotel.

Salt and Black Pepper to taste.

Vegetarian Option + Vegan Option: Replace the andouille sausage and chicken broth with plant-based alternatives to make this CrockPot Hoppin’ John vegetarian and vegan-friendly.

Gluten-Free: Zatarain’s Original Dirty Rice Mix and the brand’s other rice mixes are gluten-free! The remaining ingredients are typically gluten-free, but you’ll want to check each label if you are highly sensitive.

Smaller Serving Size + Larger Group/More Servings: The written recipe yields six servings. Scale it up or down, depending on your desired number of servings, keeping in mind that you may need to work in batches if you scale up.

Make it Spicy: This dish has some heat built into it from the dirty rice mix and andouille sausage. Add extra Cajun seasoning or red pepper flakes to taste to make it even spicier.

Sugar-Free: The written recipe contains 6 grams of sugar per serving. Use a sugar-free salsa to make this dish sugar-free, as the other ingredients only have trace amounts of sugar.
