While we are a travel blog and not a cooking blog, I tried my hand at making one of Quebec’s traditional desserts, Tarte au Sucre, or sugar pie! And let me tell you, it was a huge hit. So much so that I just had to make it again and share it with you.

If you're a fellow fan of maple syrup, then get your baking hands out, this one’s for you. I put together a simple sugar pie recipe for those traveling who have a limited kitchen, or just anyone who loves baking, but not necessarily tedious parts.

Follow along for a truly delicious dessert: Quebec Sugar Pie! Maybe you want to make your own to enjoy at home, or maybe you want to share this at a holiday party. Whatever the reason, whatever the season, I know Quebec sugar pie is something you need to try.

Quebec Sugar Pie

I tried a couple of different recipes, found what I loved best, and created this recipe for anyone to follow. I call it my lazy baker’s recipe. Because let’s be real, not everyone has time for intricate baking. So let’s begin.

This beloved dessert is enjoyed throughout France, Belgium, Canada, and the Midwest US. However, the Quebec Sugar Pie is special because of the delicious maple syrup in it.

I successfully baked Quebec sugar pie twice in our Airbnb while living in Beaupre, Quebec. If I could accomplish this in my small rental kitchen, you can as well.

Quebec Sugar Pie: An Easy Dessert Recipe

Materials

  • Baking sheet

  • Medium saucepan

  • Whisk

  • Measuring Cups

  • Oven

Ingredients

  • 1 Deep Dish Pie Shell (IGA Compliments Brand)

  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour

  • 2 tbsp cornstarch

  • ¼ tsp salt

  • 1.5 cups heavy cream

  • ½ cup pure maple syrup*

  • 1 cup light brown sugar

*If you can’t get pure maple syrup, no worries, just use a total of 1.5 cups of brown sugar.

Instructions

1. Set pie crust on the counter, and preheat the oven to 400°F. In a medium saucepan, mix together all other ingredients. Turn the heat up to medium-high and begin mixing with a whisk. It will look clumpy at first, just keep mixing it.

2. Bring to a boil and mix frequently for one minute. Then remove from the heat and continue mixing for a minute or two to avoid burning the sugar on the bottom.

3. Let the mixture cool for a few minutes. Set the pie crust on a flat baking sheet. Pour the pie mixture into the crust.

4. Put in the oven and bake for 35 minutes. It should turn golden brown. Let it cool, or serve it hot and enjoy!

We recommend eating it while it’s still warm from the oven. It will be runnier and messier, but it’s fresh and delicious. To spice things up, add whipped cream or vanilla ice cream on top of a hot pie slice!

If you refrigerate leftovers and want to heat them, you can pop a slice in the microwave for about a minute, or bake it in the oven at 325°F for about 10 minutes.

I loved baking Quebec sugar pie while living in the region. It’s a staple here, and you simply must try it! If you want to grab a slice quickly take a look below at the best places to find Quebec sugar pie in Quebec City!
