We are a full-service animal hospital providing comprehensive pet healthcare services in Carrollton, TX. Our veterinarians offer a wide variety of medical, surgical, and dental services. Our hospital has advanced equipment and technologies, including comprehensive in-house testing for accurate diagnosis, digital x-ray, surgical suites, dental suites, and a pharmacy.   • Dr. Kirk Esmond

    Veterinarian

    Dr. Kirk Esmond started working in Carrollton, TX upon graduation from Texas A&M University in 1987. He established Josey Ranch Pet Hospital in 1991. His love of medicine and dedication to his clients and patients has allowed for the rapid and continued growth of JRPH. Dr. Esmond prides himself on the quality level of progressive, state of the art medicine his office provides to the community.

    He received hisB.S. in Animal Sciencefrom TAMU in 1983, hisB.S. in Veterinary Sciencein 1985, and hisDoctor of Veterinary Medicinedegree in 1987. Dr. Esmond developed his strong interest in veterinary medicine early in his childhood from his involvement with 4-H livestock and with family pets.

    He has been involved in some capacity with the breeding and showing of AKC registered dogs for the last 40 years. His interest in reproduction has spanned his 29 year professional career. He offers full diagnostic reproduction services for the dog and bitch. He affiliation with Zoetis led him to establish Canine sem*n Freezing Center at JRPH in 1997. Dr. Esmond is currently employed by Zoetis as their reproductive technical consultant and the national trainer for all new sem*n freezing centers and he teachers Trans Cervical Insemination breeding techniques. JRPH is one of the top Zoetis freeze centers in the US.

    Dr. Esmond is currently a member of the Dallas County Veterinary Medical Association, the Texas Veterinary Medical Association, the American Veterinarian Medical Association and the Society for Theriogenology (SFT). He attends the annual continuing education symposium for the SFT to further his knowledge and interest in reproduction. Dr. Esmond gives tours of Josey Ranch Pet Hospital to local schools and churches and has spoken at all grade levels within the local school system. He also enjoys speaking to local and all breed dog clubs and enjoyed speaking at the annual national conference for the Society for Theriogenology .

    Dr. Esmond currently lives in Argyle, TX with his partner of 24 years. In his spare time he raises registered Hampshire sheep and provides lambs to FFA and 4-H youth for exhibition at statewide and national market lamb shows. He enjoys traveling, yard work, maintaining his farm, his livestock, and cycling.

  • Dr. Melissa F. Cortiaus

    Veterinarian

    Dr. Cortiaus has been with Josey Ranch Pet Hospital since 2004. She was raised in Dallas and graduated from JJ Pearce High School in Richardson. She attended Texas A&M and graduated from Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine in 1993. She has worked in the Dallas area since graduating in general small animal medicine and also worked at a local emergency clinic part time before starting a family.

    She enjoys surgery and medicine cases both and canine reproduction. She has been married to fellow veterinarian and classmate Dr. Bill Cortiaus since 1993 and they have two children, Lauryn and Austin. Lauryn will be attending SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) in Savannah Georgia in the fall. Go Bees! Austin attends Shepton High School in Plano. He is a Soccer player and is a member of the Shepton High School Marching Band. Go Stallions!

    Her family currently includes two shelties, two cats and a Chinchilla. In her spare time, Dr. Cortiaus competes in the sport of Canine Agility with her shelties. She also enjoys photography and scrap booking. And volunteers as a photographer with Shepton’s Band. She also enjoys reading and is a huge Outlander fan!

  • Dr. Alison Calhoun

    Veterinarian

    Dr. Alison Calhoun was born and raised in Plano, Texas. She obtained her bachelor’s degree from the University of Kansas and her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from Midwestern University in Phoenix, Arizona (Yes, the one vet at Josey Ranch that’s not an Aggie!)

    Dr. Calhoun has always loved animals, but it wasn’t until college when she started volunteering at the local animal shelter that she decided that caring for animals was her calling. She then was a veterinary assistant for two years prior to attending veterinary school, and is happy to finally be back in the Dallas area after living all over the U.S. for the past ten years.

    Dr. Calhoun has a special interest in internal medicine, clinical pathology, dentistry, and preventative medicine. Client education is extremely important to Dr. Calhoun, and she enjoys spending time with clients addressing their questions and concerns in order to ensure their four-legged companions are happy and healthy.

    In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her husband (John), dogs (Charlee and Remington), and cat (Delilah). She also loves going to concerts, sporting events (Rock Chalk Jayhawk!) and watching The Office reruns.

  • Dr. Jennifer Barnett

    Veterinarian

    Dr. Barnett was raised in Montgomery, TX and joined the JRPH family in 2019. She has always had a passion for animals and at 5 years old she knew she wanted to be a veterinarian. She always kept two quotes from her dad in the back of her mind while she worked hard to pursue her dream; “you can do anything you put your mind to,” and “attitude is everything.”

    Upon graduation from high school, she attended Texas A&M University where in 2012 she earned a B.S. in Biomedical Sciences. During school and breaks she continued to expand her knowledge of animal care and medicine covering small animal, exotic, equine and food animal species. During this journey she would come to value the importance of client communication and education. Dr. Barnett later earned her M.S. in Biomedical Sciences at TAMU in 2015, before earning her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree from Texas A&M University in May 2019.

    She loves working with all types of animals and she enjoys learning about several specialties in veterinary medicine. Dr. Barnett has special interests in reproduction, preventative medicine, neurology and surgery. During her free time, Dr. Barnett enjoys spending time with her two dogs (Annabelle and Eli), caring for her exotic plant collection, singing, and dancing. She also enjoys art, hiking, horseback riding, fishing, gardening, and hanging out with family and friends.

  • Dr. Marla Teixeira

    Veterinarian

    Dr. Marla Teixeira was born in Lima, Peru and moved to Florida in 2002. Growing up her family always made sure there was at least one four-legged companion in the house and by the age of 5 she knew she wanted to be a veterinarian. Moving from a big city to a rural town in Florida sparked Dr. Teixeira’s interest for agriculture and large animals. All throughout high school she was involved with her local FFA chapter and she would later pursue a veterinary degree with a mixed animal tract.

    After high school, she attended University of Florida (Go Gators!) and graduated with her B.S. in Animal Science with a specialization in Animal Biology and a minor in Business Administration. She then attended veterinary school at St. George’s University on the beautiful island of Grenada and completed her clinical year at Oklahoma State University in 2019.

    After obtaining her veterinary degree, Dr. Teixeira’s interest in large animal medicine landed her in the state of Texas for the first two years of her career where she practiced medicine on all animals, from small rabbits to bucking bulls. However, her passion for small animal medicine led her to move to the north Dallas area. Dr. Teixeira’s interests include ophthalmology, soft tissue surgery, shelter medicine and large animal medicine.

    In her free time, Dr. Teixeira enjoys going on hikes with her dog Lucky, reading, traveling, attending/hosting game nights, working out on her Peloton and binge-watching Netflix shows with her three adorable cats Mycroft, Moka and Pepper.

  • Dr. Katherine Goleniak

    Veterinarian

    Growing up with two veterinarians for parents, and a love for all animals, Dr. Katherine Goleniak always knew that this was her dream career. Dr. Goleniak grew up in Brighton Michigan and has been working in the veterinary field since she was 16. After attending Michigan State University for undergrad, she moved away from home to attend veterinary school. Upon receiving her veterinary degree from Midwestern University in Arizona in 2019, she moved to California to be with her husband and start her career. In early 2022, she relocated to Texas and joined Josey Ranch Pet Hospital.

    Dr. Goleniak’s professional interests include urgent care and internal medicine. She shares her home with a mini dachshund named Nutmeg, a cat, and multiple reptiles. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her husband and baby, exploring the DFW area, and trying every local restaurant she can find! Dr. Goleniak is excited to be a part of the Josey Ranch family, and can’t wait to meet all of your pets!

  • Dr. Shannon Baber

    Doctor

    Dr Shannon Baber obtained her bachelor’s degree (’95) and Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine (’00) from Texas A&M. She has been in practice for the past 24 years and has come full circle to rejoin the team at Josey Ranch Pet Hospital. After a short stent in Maryland where she worked in a practice that offered both traditional care and holistic support, her interest was sparked in the eastern side of medicine. She first saw the need for a more integrative approach in pain management with some of her aging patients in which they struggled with arthritic pain that was either not well controlled by traditional medication or because they had underlying health issues that prevented the use of such meds. This interest led her to the Chi Institute in Florida, where she received her certification in Traditional Chinese Medical Evaluation and CVA (Certified Veterinary Acupuncture) in the Spring of 2017 and is happy to be able to offer her patients the best of both worlds.

    She lives with her family in Frisco and is looking forward to joining the Empty Nester club in the fall. She was active in NCL with her daughter and continued that tradition with her son through YMSL. She continues to volunteer actively at Mane Gait and through her church family at St Andrews. Her professional interest includes internal medicine cases, dentistry, integrative medicine, and acupuncture. Outside of work you can find Dr Baber enjoying a hike with her short haired pointer, biking, learning golf, cooking, and finding a little zen at the yoga studio.

    Practice Manager

    Tina has been with Josey Ranch Pet Hospital since August 1996. She worked as a Technician until she took over as Practice Manager in 2003. She and her husband have one daughter who is currently a college student at Texas A&M. Tina has 2 dogs, Murhphy and Mac and 2 cats, Mao and Little. In her spare time Tina likes to travel and spend time with her family.

    Licensed Veterinary Technician

    Angela has been with Josey Ranch Pet Hospital since March 2020. She graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University with a Bachelors in Animal Science in 2015. Angela completed the Veterinary Technology program at Dallas Cedar Valley College in 2019 and is now a licensed Veterinary Technician. Angela has 2 dogs, Axel and Reed and 1 cat, Aspen.

    Veterinary Technician

    Ramiro was born in Puerto Rico. He moved to Texas in 2001. He has been Veterinary Technician since 2003. In his free time, Ramiro enjoys biking and hiking with his son Aiden and his four-legged son Drago.

    Veterinary Technician

    Tosha joined the Josey Ranch team in 2012. Previously she spent 8 years at a boarding and grooming facility. She has enjoyed working with animals since 2004 where she began her career with animals at a horse ranch. Outside of the clinic Tosha enjoys spending time with family/friends, fishing, painting, arts, and live music.

    Veterinary Technician

    Summer has been a vet tech since 2006 and she loves what she does. Summer has been married to her husband, Chris, since 2006 and they have a daughter named Audrey. They also have a yellow lab named Hef and chocolate lab named Halo. In her spare time, Summer likes to sew and bake for her family and loves doing woodworking and crafts.

    Jessica has been in the veterinary field since 2007. She has been married since 2009 and has three beautiful girls and a son. Jessica also shares her home with her cat, Pascal and her shepherd/husky mix, Shusky. Jessica has been with JRPH since 2012. She works both as a receptionist and a technician assistant. In her free time, Jessica enjoys spending time with her family and friends.

    Julie was born and raised in Illinois. Her first career was in the human healthcare field as an operating room technician. She then took this knowledge and pursued a career with horses, her first love, managing a horse boarding facility for 26 years. There she raised and showed Clydesdales, Belgians, Friesians and Scottish Terriers. In 2018 Julie and her Boston Terrier, Petunia, relocated to Texas to be near family. She joined the Josey Ranch team and enjoys working with the staff and clientele.
